What is yoga?

Here I’ve been, writing about yoga for peace. And just now, it dawned on me, that many people out there, many readers, may not know what yoga is!

This realization came after a struggle. I’ve been blogging about my thesis work, and worrying that not enough people show up to class regularly to get a good set of data (quantitative or qualitative) to work with. This week, a new student showed up, and she sat down on the couch, shoes and all. She told me it was her first time doing yoga.

Since we had time, I asked her what she thought yoga was, what she came for, and what she expected. I was surprised: she had no clue what yoga is, but she heard it was relaxing from another woman in her support group who had been attending.

Then it was my turn to talk about what yoga is. I was surprised again: I stumbled to come up with an answer that would make sense in this situation. Saying “yoga is life” or “yoga is peace” is true yet somewhat arrogant and inconsiderate of diversities. How could I sum it up in a few simple phrases to someone completely new to yoga?

What is the definition of yoga to you? Your answers will be very useful when I do 15-minute demonstration & presentation sessions to DV support groups.

Here are a couple of articles that discuss the same…. I think!

News on Domestic Violence

Since I've been blogging about yoga and domestic violence, I thought I would share Dr. Phil's stories as well. The television icon is asking people to break the silence! http://blog.drphil.com/2010/09/09/our-ninth-season/
